If you live in an older home, you’re going to have to learn a little bit about brick restoration. Even if you’d rather hire a crew, you should be able to fix some of the smaller damages on your own. If nothing else, you get a nice sense of accomplishment and you may save a heck of a lot of money.
If you’re going to need sfull brick repair say, replacing several square feet of a dilapidated wall, then you should probably hire a professional brick repair crew. However, the little stuff isn’t really that hard to figure out on your own.
Now, there are plenty of techniques, and you’ll see plenty of experts arguing about which way is the absolute best, and they all think that their method is the only right method. Most of the commonly used methods work about the same. However, it is the experience and expertise of the company working on your project that will make your brick restoration a success. So we’ll just give you one basic, simple technique, and if you’d like to study up on all the other methods out there, a quick internet search should turn up dozens of different methods.
Note that this only really applies to smaller jobs. As mentioned above, if you need to renovate half a wall, your best bet is to call some professionals.
Step One
Removing damaged, cracked bricks. This can be done with a hammer and chisel. If you only want to fill in a crack with some brick sealant, just do that, and then scrape the excess off. You can sand it when you’re finished if you want a smooth surface for staining later. With the hammer and chisel, just take your time and try not to do more damage in the process!
Step Two
Using the hammer and chisel for the big chunks, and a surface grinder for the rest, you should grind down all the rough mortar edges.
Step Three
Bricks and mortar. Self explanatory, but you may want to ask the staff at your hardware store for advice if you’re not already familiar with the process.
Step Four
Once the mortar dries, you’re going to have an area of restored brick and mortar that doesn’t match the rest of the surface. This can easily be taken care of with some brick stain. When you want to match it to a lighter, perhaps sun bleached color, you should use natural brick finishes or water based methods. If you need a deep, rich color, we recommend acid based brick staining. The acid based stuff can be a little trickier to apply, and you need to wear a dust mask and some gloves, but if you need to match a deep color, it’s basically the only way to go.
And there you go, that wasn’t so hard, was it? There’s definitely something to be said for knowing that you have the ability to take care of your own home.
